THE STORY
Byōbu Tradition with a Twist
In Tokyo's Sumida Ward, where Japanese tradition meets modernism, lies the studio of an artisan whose work connects the past and the present. Koto Kataoka is the third-generation successor of the renowned Kataoka Byōbu, a family business known for creating stunning folding screens. With a journey marked by dedication, exploration, and a deep appreciation for Japanese heritage, Kataoka-san continues to push the boundaries of this timeless art.
Growing up in a family where folding screens were a daily sight, Kataoka-san always had a close connection to this unique art form. However, it wasn't until traveling abroad that he began to truly appreciate the depth and beauty of Japanese traditions. "Although folding screens were always a part of my family business, I only began to truly appreciate them after traveling abroad and seeing Japan from an outside perspective," Kataoka-san shares. This newfound appreciation fueled his desire to reintroduce and express the richness of Japanese culture through his work.
From a young age, Kataoka-san was deeply influenced by music, particularly American Hip-Hop. The concept of "sampling," or reconstructing existing sounds to create something new, resonated profoundly with him. "I try to incorporate this idea into my work with folding screens," he explain. This innovative approach allows Kataoka-san to blend traditional techniques with contemporary influences, creating pieces that are both timeless and modern.
Mastering the art of folding screens requires understanding the properties of paper and adapting to climate conditions. Kataoka-san highlights the importance of considering humidity and dryness. Through years of refining his techniques, he has developed a unique style that honors tradition and embraces innovation. As the current president of Kataoka Byōbu, Kataoka-san balances creativity with business demands, constantly considering product viability, target markets, and costs. Despite these challenges, Kataoka-san dedicates time to nurture his creativity and passion.
Kataoka-san values his collaborations with local artists in Stockholm, Sweden, which showcase the fusion of cultures and the universal appeal of their craft. Central to his work is his deep respect for Japanese traditions. Kataoka-san emphasizes that the most crucial aspect of folding screens is the underlying structure beneath the beautiful surface, reflecting meticulous attention to detail and reverence for tradition.
"Folding screens are meant to be displayed,
and I hope it can uplift people's spirits even just a little whenever they see them"
Community and collaboration are essential to Kataoka-san's creative process. Frequently working with other artisans and young artists, he draws inspiration from their unique designs and expressions. "I am constantly inspired by other artists" he says. These collaborations allow Kataoka-san to continually learn and evolve, ensuring his work remains fresh and innovative.
Looking ahead, Kataoka-san aims to be a role model for the next generation of the craftsmen. He wants to show that work and craftsmanship are powerful ways to express oneself and inspire pride in Japanese traditions. He also aspires to create folding screens that push the boundaries of the ancient art form.
Through the stunning folding screens, Kataoka-san invites us to appreciate the beauty and depth of Japanese traditions.
