THE STORY
An Artistic Maestro
Masami Tanaka began his career as a leather craftsman at the age of 20. He honed his skills in Florence, learning the fundamentals of leather product design and creation. In 2016, he launched his own brand, 'MASAMI TANAKA,' and two years later, he founded 'TAKUMI TOKYO,' where he serves as the Creative Director. Since 2019, he has been operating his atelier, expanding his activities to include product design, spatial design, and artistic endeavors. In January 2024, Tanaka showcased his work at the prestigious "Maison & Objet" interior and design trade show in France.
Leather Art
After 17 years of producing leather goods, Tanaka shifted his focus to creating unique leather art pieces. His leather art is unparalleled, designed to be framed and displayed like tapestries or paintings. Tanaka uses various types and textures of leather to create scenic designs, colorful geometric patterns, and intricate combinations of leather with driftwood, dried flowers, and animal horns, maximizing the material's potential and versatility.
Leather Vintage Lamps
Tanaka also crafts vintage lamps with a modern twist. Using antique lamp bases, he meticulously disassembles, cleans, and updates the wiring and socket covers before designing custom leather shades. His designs strategically balance light and shadow, ensuring that the lamps are visually stunning both when illuminated and as standalone art pieces. Tanaka personally selects the frames and bases for his leather art and lamps, sourcing them from domestic and international markets.
Crossover Products
By combining various Japanese materials, Tanaka creates high-quality, multifaceted products that showcase the unique characteristics of each material. He collaborates with artisans across Japan, visiting their workshops to understand their craft and find inspiration for new products. This hands-on approach allows him to push the boundaries of what can be achieved with different materials and techniques. Tanaka currently offers over ten different products.
"Despite these differences, I believe that people involved in craftsmanship, regardless of their field, can understand each other to some extent. Passion is the key factor."
'Chitose' Collection
The 'Chitose' collection features table lamps and pendant lights made from three distinct materials sourced from three Japanese prefectures. The bases are crafted from Nambu ironware, a traditional craft from Iwate Prefecture. The wooden shafts are made using lathe processing techniques from Gifu Prefecture, one of Japan's top furniture-making regions. The shades are created from hand-made washi paper, an intangible cultural heritage of Saitama Prefecture. This collection exemplifies Tanaka's ability to bring together Japan's finest craftsmanship and materials into cohesive and stunning designs.
Spatial Design
Tanaka's passion for interior design began with transforming his home into a soothing space. He aims to redefine the value of time and richness through his work, creating environments that enhance the lifestyle experience. Tanaka offers comprehensive spatial design services, including furniture selection, installation, and styling, for both commercial and residential spaces. His unique approach blends warmth, natural materials, and a mix of Japanese and Western elements, resulting in harmonious and inviting atmospheres.
